TDS Update

Colin Burdick, CAD Technologist and Clerk of the Works for the TDS Center, reports that masons will continue to build brick walls for the next few weeks as long as the weather cooperates. The air barrier membrane is almost completely installed and air infiltration tests have been mostly positive. Electricians are rapidly wiring the first floor while plumbers are running the refrigeration lines to the air source heat pumps. Spandrel glass has arrived and will be installed, making the operable windows the last piece of the curtain wall system to be installed.

Sheetrock covers about 60 percent of the second floor walls, and preparations are being made to begin sheetrocking some of the first floor areas.

TDS Update

Brick installation is scheduled to begin early next week as the masons are setting up on the west end. Installation of the stairs from the Stair 3 link to the main roof has begun.

Continuing exterior work includes air barrier installation and sealing the spandrel window panes in the curtain wall frames.

Interior work picks up this week with sheetrock being hung in the second floor offices, and insulation being installed between the studs for acoustical purposes. Acoustical spray has been applied to the SPDI lab ceiling as preparations are made to get the woodshop ceiling sprayed. Electricians are installing panels and are almost finished wiring the second floor. Plumbers have been installing utilities in the woodshop annex, as well as connecting refrigeration lines to the air conditioning units.

Door and window frames are going into the architecture studio while the steel columns are prepped to receive the pivoting doors.

Keene State Gives Athletic Concession Trailer a New Look

From Stuart Kaufman, Sports Information:

Nothing beats fresh popcorn and a fresh coat of paint.

A new Keene State College spring athletic season has brought a new-look concession trailer to Owl Athletic Complex.

Showing its age after 16 seasons and an assortment of scratches and dents from wayward baseball, softball and lacrosse balls, the trailer went in for a facelift in February. Keene State made no concessions with the concessions.

A week at the Sodexo Spa did wonders for the trailer, which has garnered rave reviews from constituents. There have also been changes to the menu with chicken Caesar wraps and pretzels added to the signature dishes of hot dogs, popcorn and nachos.

During the spring season, the concession trailer gets carted back and forth from lacrosse to the baseball/softball areas of the complex. Hungry for a winning season, Owl fans also have a new bright, shiny place to satisfy their hunger during games.

TDS Update

The exterior of the TDS building is starting to take shape, almost catching up with interior progress. Glass has been installed in the curtain wall on the northwest and southwest corners while work is performed on the north side frame. Masons have been installing the precast base and have nearly completed the southwest run while moving on to the north side. Other exterior work includes the air barrier mostly completed on the north side.

Interior progress includes the walls and doors of the woodshop annex being framed, as well as other interior framing work and most of the window and door openings are in place. Electricians have installed their boxes and are currently wiring the second floor while fireproofing has commenced on the exterior steel frames. Ductwork has been installed in the second floor lab areas, continuing on the SPDI lab on the first floor. The steel for the pivot doors between the corridor and the studio on the second floor have been installed. Plumbers have continued to run air, gas, water, and refrigeration lines throughout the building with insulators behind.

TDS Update

Masons continue to place the precast base panels around the perimeter of the building before they start laying brick.

Air barrier installation is about halfway complete on the building, as they have been working on the north side wrapping the window blocking.

Curtain wall is being installed on the southwest and northwest corners, allowing some of the tenting to be removed.

Stair #2 is almost ready for use, as the pans and landings were poured recently.

The woodshop annex floor has been poured and roofers continue to install the roof over the annex while that area comes together.

Window frames, door frames, and interior partitions are being installed on the first floor while the second floor is mostly complete, ready for electrical rough in and other utilities. We hope the momentum built up in the past few weeks remains while the weather continues to be on our side.

TDS Update

Significant progress has been made over the last few weeks at the TDS Center.

On the second floor, interior walls are almost completely framed while plumbers hang the last few air source heat pumps. Stairs have begun to be installed starting at Stair 3; these should be accessible by the end of the week. Masons have finished their part of the annex area and have completed most of the elevator shaft. Steel workers will finish the roof decking on the annex this week so that roofers can start sometime in the middle of next week. Sheetrock has been installed in the Butterfield attic and will move to the second floor office area once electricians finish their wiring. Waterproofing of the foundation is almost complete, while the exterior sheathing begins at the west end of Stair 1. The precast bases around the perimeter should start being installed late next week as they look to take down the plastic and install the exterior sheathing.

The IT Group is Going Green. Join Them!

From the IT Group:

February 1 through April 20, the IT Group is hosting a recycle mania contest. Recycle unwanted, unused and no longer needed electronic files from your email and P drive storage. A snapshot will be taken before the start of the contest and the person who has reduced the largest amount of space in these two areas will win a free lunch!

Managing your space in your email account and your storage drives has many benefits for both you and Keene State College. Regular maintenance provides:

  • Cost containment: If information is never deleted and storage space is exceeded, it may be necessary to resolve this issue by purchasing additional space.
  • Easier access to important information: By organizing drives and email efficiently, it will be easier for you to locate important information without unnecessary searching, allowing for more efficient use of time.
  • Reduction in folder duplication and outdated information: Reviewing your folders and email on a regular schedule will help you identify folder duplication, allowing you to delete what is not necessary and reduce your storage space.

The HelpDesk website provides excellent tips and best practices to help you manage your files more efficiently.

Coming to the Redfern: 69° South: The Shackleton Project

From Jackie Hooper, Redfern Arts Center:

Legendary explorer Ernest Shackleton’s gripping tale of survival in the Antarctic will be recreated in a stunning theatrical performance at the Redfern. The Phantom Limb Company will perform 69° South: The Shackleton Project on Wednesday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Redfern’s Main Theatre. Tickets range from $15 to $35 and can be purchased by calling the Box Office, 603-358-2168 or ordering online at www.keene.edu/racbp.

Fresh from a successful run in New York, Phantom Limb Company brings Shackleton’s journey to life in an evocative vision of the Antarctic that incorporates puppetry, dance, scenic effects, projections and music. Featuring a haunting score by the award-winning Kronos Quartet, 69° South conjures up an unforgettable world of ice and darkness, where the only force stronger than the elements is the endurance of the human spirit.

The visual evocation of the South Pole’s forbidding beauty and the expedition’s courageous survivors, will be duplicated in a photography exhibit to be displayed in the Redfern Arts Center lobby February 7 to 29.

Members of the Phantom Limb Company will be available for a 6 p.m. Meet and Greet reception with the audience prior to the February 15 performance and will stay after the show for a question and answer session. Earlier that day, a panel discussion by Phantom Limb Company and KSC faculty members will explore research into the history of Shackleton’s journey to Antarctica and what’s been learned about the Antarctic continent’s environment and geography.

For more on Shackleton and the production, see the full story at the keene.edu news site.

TDS Update

The second floor slab has been poured and the first floor slab will be poured by the end of the week. Saw cuts to the second floor slab will commence the beginning of next week. Framing on the first floor will finish this week as we get closer to being able to sheet rock the office area. Masons will be working on the annex area, building the wall so steel can be erected and the roof can be installed. The roofers have finished covering the main building and continue to finish details to ensure a watertight roof. Electricians and plumbers have been working on their rough-in utilities and will continue to do so as walls start to be framed in the new building within the next couple weeks.

Manchester Airport Parking Changes

From Tomasa LaFreniere, Purchasing:

The Highlander Inn has closed. Parking options at the Manchester Airport no longer include the Highlander Inn.

USNH has been working with the State of NH Dept of Admin Services and the Manchester Regional Airport to add all USNH entities to the States contract with the airport for discounted parking.

Some points for parking at the airport are:

  1. The State of NH contract is to be used for business travel only
  2. Parking fee using the State of NH contract is $5/day
  3. If using the State’s contract option, we must use a form that needs to be completed by the traveler and signed by their supervisor (as in the past)

The KSC Purchasing office has put a link on our website to the document providing instructions for using the State of NH contract with the Manchester Airport. In this document, you’ll find the form to be used by travelers. The form itself is also available at that site.

TDS Update

The second floor slab is scheduled to be poured Tuesday the 31st, so anticipate plenty of concrete mixing truck traffic on Blake St.

Roofers have about a quarter of the roof covered while electricians have most of the floor boxes installed on the second floor.

Backfilling at the annex is almost complete while electricians ran their underslab conduit to the electrical rooms.

Spray foam insulation is almost complete in the attic of Butterfield, and sink line rough-in has begun on the second floor bathrooms. Speaking of the second floor of Butterfield, framing of the office and bathroom walls is completed, so the space is coming together.

Keene State Receives NSCAA Women’s Soccer Team Academic Award

From Stuart Kaufman, Sports Information:

The Keene State College women’s soccer team not only got the job done on the field, but in the classroom as well. The Owls were one of 572 women’s soccer teams, including all three NCAA Divisions and NAIA, to be recognized for their academic achievement by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for posting a combined grade point average of 3.0 or better.

The Owls’ lofty 3.56 combined GPA for fall 2010 and spring 2011 puts them in elite company. Among the 572 total teams recognized, Keene State is ranked 22nd. The Owls are seventh among the 179 Division III teams honored, and had the second-best GPA in New England behind MIT.

The Owls also had a very productive season on the field, finishing with a 15-7-3 record on the way to capturing the Little East Conference regular season championship, advancing to the conference finals and earning a berth in the ECAC New England tournament.
