Optimizing Reflection as a Teaching & Learning Tool for Community-Campus Partnerships
February 10, 2012
10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
SERESC, Bedford, NH

Presenters:
Suzanne Cashman, Professor, University of Massachusetts Medical School
Barbara Gottlieb, Professor, Harvard University School of Public Health

Barbara and Suzanne presented “Service Learning for Healthcare Professionals” at MCPHS in November 2010 and were so well received we’ve invited them back to facilitate a Reflection training. Reflection is a cornerstone in teaching and learning that can enhance community partnerships and contribute to the personal growth of students engaged in service work. However, reflection does not always achieve its full potential because many are not aware of how to plan, implement and evaluate reflection activities, community members are not included, and only a narrow range of refection activities are considered. This is a skill-building workshop in which participants will learn to develop reflection activities that will achieve their full potential.  Click here <http://cts.vresp.com/c/?CampusCompactforNH/c1e3361bfe/10394da7ca/9058fc7a16>  to register.

Community Partners Event Form

We welcome all Community Partners to fill out the Community Partners Event Form because it’s an opportunity for you and your organization to provide the Keene State College campus with your upcoming programs and/or events.

In completing this form we hope to not only bring awareness of your program/event abut also the opportunity of providing a service learning component to our students and faculty i.e how you can integrate service learning and community engagement with your program, event, presentation, topic, etc.

Service learning is a style of teaching that connects community service with the classroom environment and curriculum. Although it incorporates community service, service learning is a hands on way of advancing the classroom to become civically responsible.

Please give us information on your event that you would like to publicized with us, so we can post it on our Community Engagement Website as well as our calendar! Thank you!

CANstruction

It starts with one can. To feed the hungry. To lift the spirit. To change the world.

Canstruction, a charity committed to ending hunger, is using ‘one can’ as a catalyst for change. Hundreds of families in the Monadnock region access hunger relief programs supported by The Community Kitchen Food Bank. Canstruction’s 2nd annual Keene Design/Build Competition puts a visual spotlight on hunger while showcasing the communities best and brightest design talent. Think you have what it takes to design and build a structure made of nothing more than canned food, ingenuity, and luck? Enter today. Get creative, help stop hunger. One can.

Once again, Keene State College will be partnering with Scully Architects and the Community Kitchen to host the Canstruction competition.  Teams of five to seven people are invited to fill out an entry form to build a 10 x 10 structure made entirely out of cans.  Structures will be displayed in the Atrium of the Keene State College L.P Young Student Center.  Each sculpture will have a business sponsor and at the end of the competition the cans will be donated to the Keene Community Kitchen.

If you are interested in being apart of the event please submit the Canstruction Team Entry Form to Alyssa Day at aday@keene.edu. Once you return the entry form, a building professional will be assigned to aid in the design/build process. We hope you can participate. If you know anyone else that may wish to participate, please forward this on. We are also accepting financial donations. If you would like to donate, have a Canstruction built at your location, or become a building professional mentor, please let us know as soon as possible. For more information about Canstruction, please visit www.canstruction.org.

If you are not interested in designing a sculpture but would like to participate in the planning committee, please come to the Atrium Conference Room of the Student Center on Thursday, September 15th at 4:30 pm for our planning meeting.
