Spunky ’52 alumna Winnie Langtry, ever appreciative of the education she received here, wrote a letter to the Concord Monitor and invited those same state legislators who slashed the education budget to pitch in to the Class of 1952 Scholarship Fund.
In case the Monitor link has expired, here’s the text of her letter:
Help the students at Keene State
July 11
This week the alumni staff of Keene State College met with the planning committee for our 60th reunion planned for June 2012. When we asked what we as a class of dwindling numbers could do, they answered in unison, “Scholarships!” The cost of tuition is going up due to the huge cuts in appropriations from the Legislature.
Most of us do not have large amounts of money and many are living from month to month, but we do appreciate the wonderful education we had at Keene. Young people are working one and two jobs to go to school, as many of us did, but the rising cost for some will mean leaving college without scholarship help.
I would like to ask each legislator to join us and send $100 to Keene State College and earmark it for the Class of 1952 Scholarship Fund. These gifts will offset the cuts that have been made this year, and you will know the joy of assisting students complete their education.
Along with the legislators, I encourage Keene State College graduates to send checks to our scholarship fund. The class of 1952 would be so grateful, and we will let you know how much every gift sent is appreciated.
If you have more fundraising ideas for scholarships, please let me know. I can be reached via email at langtry@mcttelecom.com.
I pray that we can make a difference as we continue to “Enter to learn, go forth to serve,” the college motto.
