Alumni Networking After Hours!

AlumniCollage
Tuesday, April 16, 2013, 6 p.m.
The Barley House, 132 North Main St., Concord, NH

We’ve been gathering alums near and far this past year. Join us on the 16th and meet Interim President Jay Kahn and Alumni Association Board Host Brian Parda ’01 along with alumni legislators and Capital Region alumni.

These networking events are a great casual way to connect with some of your fellow alumni. The Alumni Association will sponsor the appetizers—you cover your own drinks! Invite other alums, and yes, you may bring a guest! Email Patty at pfarmer@keene.edu or call 603-358-2370 to let us know you plan to be there (so we’ll make sure to have enough food and seats).

Two Area Companies Support TDS Center & Safety Studies

TDSThe MacMillin Company, has pledged $6000 to the TDS Center Campaign in support of the building project. MacMillin is a long established commercial contracting company in the Monadnock Region, now owned by the DEW Construction Company. “MacMillin Company, like many other companies throughout the Monadnock Region, is a long-time friend of the College, recognizing the educational and economic value that KSC brings to the region and the state. We’re very pleased with their commitment to the TDS project and our Safety Studies program.” explained Ken Goebel, KSC’s director of development.

The CNA Foundation of CNA Insurance has provided a $2500 financial aid award for our safety students to be used this spring. This is the second gift from CNA towards the TDS Center Campaign and will be counted in the scholarship segment of the campaign. “CNA now employs seven KSC safety studies alumni in its insurance business. The company attended our recent Safety Job Fair in search of new employees,” Goebel said. “Clearly, this Connecticut-based company is pleased with the performance of our KSC graduates, and their financial aid award will be used to help current students.”

AAUW Gives Scholarship Support

AAUWThe Keene Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) has again supported Keene State students with gifts to two scholarship funds: $2000 to the Elsa Ware Scholarship and $1500 to the Diversity Scholarship. The local AAUW chapter has been a great supporter of KSC students since 1990; they’ve given more than $31,000 over that time. Be on the lookout for the AAUW annual book sale, set for May 15–17 on campus!

The University System of New Hampshire Board of Trustees and the Campus community have chosen Dr. Anne E. Huot to be the College’s 10th president. For the past six years, Dr. Huot served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at The College at Brockport, State University of New York, where she provided leadership and vision in the areas of academics, campus climate, strategic planning, and community and business relations. Dr. Huot, a native of Manchester, NH, will begin her role as Keene State president on July 1, 2013.

“New Hampshire is my home, and the opportunity to further establish Keene State College as a preeminent public liberal arts college is both humbling and exciting. Access to a high-quality education remains critical to preparing graduates for active engagement with their communities and for success in an increasingly complex world,” Dr. Huot said.

“Dr. Anne Huot’s commitment to the value of a liberal arts education, her vision and ever-growing success as an academic leader, and her New Hampshire roots, all with outstanding references from colleagues from throughout her career, matched extremely well with our priorities for the president,” explained George Epstein, USNH Trustee and chair of the search committee. “Dr. Huot then came to campus and connected warmly with students, faculty, staff, and community members—it was then that we knew we had Keene State’s next leader.”

The Marjorie P. Hilton Endowed Scholarship

Marjorie Hilton ’44
Marjorie Hilton ’44

Back in 1999, Marjorie Hilton ’44 took $10,000 and and worked with then KSC President Stanley Yarosewick to set up a scholarship to provide financial assistance to juniors and seniors majoring in Early Childhood Development. After Mrs. Hilton’s passing last year, her estate continued to fund the scholarship. Keene State’s Development Office recently received the last of those distributions, bringing the Marjorie P. Hilton Endowed Scholarship to $335,551.12, making it one of our largest endowed scholarships funded by bequest. It will guarantee that Mrs. Hilton’s legacy lives on here at KSC. Thanks, Marjorie!

Energy Efficiency Pays Off

Who says sustainability doesn’t pay? By continuing its commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency when it built the new Technology, Design and Safety (TDS) Center, KSC earned a $150,000 rebate check from Public Service of New Hampshire (PSNH) as part of PSNH’s New Equipment & Construction Rebate Program. The rebate s a result of the heating, ventilation, lighting, and air conditioning systems that the College chose for the TDS Center. All of the TDS Center’s equipment  meets the highest standards for energy efficiency in new construction.

Three—no, make that Four—Generations of KSC Alums

When Esther McCarthy Noseck ’33 turned 100 last April, several KSC alums came to her birthday party. And most of them were her family. Her daughter, Barbara Noseck Gendron ’63, followed in her footsteps and attended KSC, as did her granddaughter, Suzanne Gendron Hodgkins ’85. Her great-granddaughter, Amanda Hodgkins, says that she’ll be coming here as soon as she’s old enough. Just goes to show how some families know how to hold onto a good thing. By the bye, Esther will celebrate her 101st on April 13. Do remember to send her your good wishes!

Where’d I See That?

Even the new governor has seen this one! It’s not that big of a mystery, but it sure shows some of the great training KSC offers its students.
