One Roast Suckling Pig, Coming Right Up!

KSC alum Natali Kendrick Pope ’85 headed to Hollywood to become an actress but found a rewarding career as a set dresser for several feature films and TV shows, including the current season of House.

As Theatre and Dance chair Daniel Patterson recalls, “Natali called me several years ago and wanted pictures of our theatre rigging fly gallery and loft.  She had to recreate the fly gallery of an old theatre for the movie The Majestic.  I also called her when I needed a roast suckling pig for my production of The Servant of Two Masters. She asked, ‘How big?’ and sent me a lovely plastic one on a platter to use in the show.  She knows how to get or build just about anything one might want.”

Here’s an audio slideshow from the LA Times of her work on the set of House.

John “Captain Jack” Carey, 1944–2009

John Carey ’71 (Kronicle photo)
John Carey ’71 (Kronicle photo)

A larger-than-life character who ran his life on high octane, John “Captain Jack” Carey ’71, was killed July 17 while mountain biking near his home in Ophir, Colorado. Jack was a Keene native who came to KSC after a hitch in the Air Force. While on campus, he played varsity basketball and was a Kappa Delta Phi brother.

Not long after graduation, he made his way out to the Telluride area, where he became a legend as a skier and hang glider. One of his fraternity brothers, Gordi Davis ’72, remembered that Jack got his “Captain” nickname after doing a hang-gliding commercial for Coors beer in the late 70s. Jack was the first person to soar over 20,000 feet in a hang glider.

The Telluride Watch had a nice article, with slideshow, on Captain Jack, and ESPN also did an informative obituary with a fascinating video.

We bet there are some other great Jack stories out there. Please use the “comments” link below to send us your memories of this remarkable alum.

Striving for greatness

You may hear about this from other sources, too, but we’re trying to get the word out to as many people who know Keene State as we can.

From Keene State Today editor Susan Peery:

For the fall issue of Keene State Today, we need your ideas. What do you think belongs on a list of “100 Great Things about Keene State College”?

Please send suggestions, write as little or as much as you like, and suggest as many ideas as you want. Memories, events, people, buildings, courses, professors, singular encounters — whatever stands out in your mind. This issue will round out our Centennial year and we want to make it as special and inclusive as possible. We hope you will spread the word to friends of the College in Keene and beyond.

Please send your ideas to Susan Peery, speery@keene.edu, no later than Friday, May 22. If you have photos or memorabilia to share, please let us know as well. Thank you for your help.

Please help us out if you can. Think big, both in terms of what you think makes us great, and in passing this message along. Who do you know who:

  • is an alum?
  • taught a class?
  • took a class?
  • works with students?
  • hired our alums?
  • want to come here when they’re old enough?
  • attends events on campus?
  • cheers for our sports teams?
  • has children/grandchildren/nieces/nephews who went here?
  • went to Upward Bound?
  • went to the Child Development Center?
  • benefits from students’ community service?
  • woos our students for graduate school?
  • has a perspective you think we should hear?

Pass this along to them all. What do you think makes Keene State great?
