Spaulding Gym’s Extreme Makeover

There are no athletes driving towards the basket—or fans cheering them on—in Spaulding Gym this summer, but there’s plenty of activity happening there. The gym’s getting a makeover. After 43 years of heavy pounding and abuse from basketball shoes, volleyball players, and all the other shoes that run, jump, slide, and walk across the gym, and after the heavy commercial sanders from 43 annual refinishings, the floor had worn thin. So it’s coming up, and a new one is going down.

When the crew started tearing up the old floor, they realized that the bleachers, too, had seen better days (lots of them), and also needed replacing. So, the “student” side of the gym is getting bleachers with 968 molded seats. The “team” side is getting 470 chair-back seats. They fold up, the same as regular bleachers, but the chair backs pop up when the bleachers are pulled out for seating. Fans can now thrill to the excitement of Owl action in improved comfort!

Corey Vogt, first Owl player to be drafted by a major league team.

The big news around campus these days is that the Red Sox have drafted senior Corey Vogt, the Owl pitcher with a screaming fast ball. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein picked the right hander in the 39th round of the Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

A die-heart Yankees fan, Vogt will have to change his allegiance. “They’re paying my salary now, so I won’t have a hard time with it,” he said.

Keene Keeps Commissioner’s Cup

Here for the 11th-straight year!

KSC has captured the Little East Commissioner’s Cup for the 11th year in a row. “Keene State continues to set the pace for athletic excellence in the Little East Conference,” said Commissioner Jonathan C. Harper. “By winning the award every year the Commissioner’s Cup has been offered, the Owls solidify themselves as a regional and national power in Division III.”

The Commissioner’s Cup measures an institution’s overall performance in the 19 sports sponsored by the LEC. For sports in which the conference conducts in-season play (baseball, basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball), point totals are determined by the order of finish in the final regular season standings with bonus points awarded to the champion of the ensuing post-season conference championship tournament. For sports that do not conduct in-season play (cross country, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, and swimming and diving) points are awarded based on the order of finish in the conference championship meet.

Adam Skibek ’07 worked in KSC’s Sports Information Office after graduation and then headed down to Springfield College to pursue a master’s degree in sports management. He’s spending this spring in an internship with the Boston Celtics’ department of corporate partnerships and business development, which got him entrance to Shaquille O’Neal’s 39th birthday celebration at the Boston Children’s Museum recently.

Part of the celebration had Adam hoisting a young Museum attendee on his shoulders so she could mark Shaq’s height on an oversized ruler. And the photo, which you can see here, made it onto the cover of the Boston Globe sports page.

You never can tell just how high our alums might reach.

The Keene State College men’s lacrosse team will face Castleton State College at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12th, at the Owl Athletic Complex for the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Owls received the automatic bid into the tournament after their thrilling 14-10 home-turf victory over the Eastern Conn. State Warriors on Saturday in the LEC Championship game. Sophomore attackman Griffin Meehan scored six of those Owl goals, setting a new school record of 66 goals in one season and earning the distinction as the  tournament’s MVP.

The Owls managed to win the championship on Saturday despite the fact that their top goalie, junior Alec Corliss, suffered a broken leg midway in the third quarter. Corliss, who had made phenomenal 10 saves, several on point-blank shots, went down following a collision at the side of the net.

KSC enters the NCAA Tournament riding a nine-game winning streak.
