{"id":3506,"date":"2011-12-06T20:13:03","date_gmt":"2011-12-06T20:13:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.keene.edu\/newsline\/?p=3506"},"modified":"2011-12-06T20:31:16","modified_gmt":"2011-12-06T20:31:16","slug":"healthy-living-after-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.keene.edu\/newsline\/2011\/12\/06\/healthy-living-after-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Healthy Living After School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Dr. Karrie Kalich<\/strong> and <strong>Dr. Marjorie Droppa<\/strong>, associate professors of health science, have been awarded a $2,000 grant from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvardpilgrim.org\/portal\/page?_pageid=213,84006&amp;_dad=portal&amp;_schema=PORTAL\" target=\"_blank\">Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation<\/a> to develop an evidence-based nutrition and physical activity after-school program that combines elements of\u00a0 the CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keene.edu\/cdc\/sprouts.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Early Sprouts<\/a> initiatives. CATCH is a daily curriculum-based health promotion program designed to encourage physical activity and healthy food choices among children from preschool through grade 8. The Early Sprouts program encourages preschool children to enjoy healthy eating by involving them in planting, raising, harvesting, and cooking organic vegetables. Drs. Kalich and Droppa hope to develop a model that combines aspects of these two programs into something that after-school staff can use to provide\u00a0 effective nutrition and physical activity for their charges.
