Back in September, some dastardly vandals had broken this historical feature off. (So it wasn&#8217;t exactly a surprise that Director of Campus Safety <strong>Amanda Warman<\/strong>, who must have investigated the crime, was the first one to answer the puzzle.)<\/p>\n<p>When Assistant Director of Physical Plant <strong>Bud Winsor<\/strong> looked into replacing the finial, he was dismayed to learn that no one in the area could duplicate it. That was a serious dilemma\u2014the gateway is one of the College&#8217;s most distinctive architectural features. It was like a tooth was missing in the College&#8217;s charming smile.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5162\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5162\" style=\"width: 234px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5162\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.keene.edu\/newsline\/files\/2012\/11\/FinialAfter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.keene.edu\/newsline\/files\/2012\/11\/FinialAfter.jpg 234w, https:\/\/sites.keene.edu\/newsline\/files\/2012\/11\/FinialAfter-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The column now, perfectly restored to its former glory.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But serendipity was to have a hand. One of the grounds crew was having lunch at a downtown Keene eatery when Ed Dimeco approached him. Ed used to have a local business making ornamental objects out of cement, and he&#8217;s the one who made the original finials. Ed mentioned that he still had the molds and asked if Keene State might want them.<\/p>\n<p>With the original molds and some expert cement work, the column was soon restored to its former glory and replaced by Bud and his crew this mild December morning.
